Understanding infertility from a TCM perspective
How Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Understands Infertility
In TCM theory, infertility is not a single disease, but a complex manifestation of various imbalances in the body. Traditional medicine believes that "the kidney governs reproduction," and sufficient kidney qi is a crucial foundation for maintaining fertility. Simultaneously, the abundance of qi and blood, the unobstructed flow of meridians, and the normal functioning of the spleen and stomach all affect female reproductive function.
Therefore, TCM considers common factors leading to infertility to include:
Kidney qi deficiency
Qi and blood deficiency
Liver qi stagnation
Cold congealing in the uterus
Phlegm-dampness obstruction
These factors affect a woman's menstrual cycle, ovulation function, and uterine environment, thus reducing the chances of conception. Through systematic TCM gynecological conditioning, the overall constitution can often be improved, allowing the reproductive system to gradually restore normal function.
Specifically:
Before pregnancy: Regulate according to the menstrual cycle. For example, during menstruation, promote blood circulation and regulate Qi to facilitate the smooth discharge of menstrual blood.
After menstruation: Promote the growth and development of the endometrium, nourish kidney Yin and replenish blood.
Third cycle: Promote blood circulation and nourish Yin to facilitate ovulation.
Fourth stage (after ovulation until the next menstrual period): Ensure the endometrium receives a continuous and sufficient supply of Qi and blood, which is beneficial for its thickening. The main conditioning method is to warm Yang and promote Qi circulation.

How does acupuncture help with conception?
Improving the uterine environment: Increases uterine blood circulation, improves endometrial thickness and receptivity, making embryo implantation easier.
Regulating endocrine function: Adjusts the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis (HPO axis), promotes follicle development, and improves egg quality.
Reducing adverse reactions: Reduces abnormal uterine contractions after embryo transfer, helping to prevent miscarriage.
Male enhancement: Improves sperm motility, count, and morphology, having a positive effect on male infertility.
Relieving psychological stress: Reduces anxiety by releasing endorphins and balances hormonal fluctuations caused by stress.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) treatment of fertility, acupuncture is a common and effective method for treating infertility. Acupuncture stimulates specific acupoints to regulate the flow of Qi and blood, improve the endocrine system, and thus promote ovarian function and uterine blood circulation.
Commonly used acupoints include:
Guanyuan (CV4)
Zongzi (EX-B1)
Sanyinjiao (SP6)
Zusanli (ST36)
Taichong (LR3)
These acupoints help regulate the Chong and Ren meridians, improve pelvic blood circulation, and promote the recovery of ovarian function. Many patients experience a gradual stabilization of their menstrual cycles and improved ovulation after a period of acupuncture treatment.
